Well Go USA has acquired North American rights to "Tristes Tropiques," the new assassin noir from Korean director Park Hoon-jung, as Seoul-based sales agent Finecut closed a fresh round of international deals ahead of AFM.
The film hits Korean theaters on Nov. 25. Finecut is carrying it in its American Film Market line-up this week.
Who bought what?
The new patspan territories across three continents:
- North America: Well Go USA
- France: Swift Distribution, with president and CEO Didier Costet calling the film "an exciting new cinematic journey"
- Spain and Andorra: Alfa Pictures
- Italy: Blue Swan Entertainment
- Taiwan: CaiChang International, Inc.
These deals build on earlier sales announced to Splendid Film (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), Media4Fun (Poland), Multivision India (the Indian subcontinent), PT Prima Cinema Multimedia (Indonesia) and Izagur Media (Mongolia).
What kind of film is it?
The story follows a band of young killers trained by Master, a figure who holds absolute sway over a tropical rainforest. Then Master turns up dead. Nobody knows who killed him, and the assassins begin to distrust one another. It's a closed-circle setup — the whodunit structure transplanted into an action genre.
The cast mixes Korean and Taiwanese actors. Lee Sin-young ("Rebound"), Park Yu-rim ("Drive My Car"), Kim Myung-min ("Your Honor") and Park Hae-soo ("Squid Game") lead the ensemble. Austin Lin ("96 Minutes"), Chen Yi-Wen ("The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon") and Wang Po-Chieh ("Eye of the Storm") join them.
Why Well Go USA bought it
Well Go USA isn't taking a gamble on an unknown. The distributor previously released Park's "The Witch" films and "The Childe" in North America. Doris Pfardrescher, the company's president and CEO, said: "We're thrilled to continue our relationship with Park Hoon-jung. 'Tristes Tropiques' takes his signature blend of style, emotion, and hard-hitting action to a whole new level."
Park's other credits include "Night in Paradise" for Netflix and "The Tyrant" for Disney+. Gold Moon Pictures, Park's own company, produced the film, with Studio&New co-producing. Mindmark Inc., the Shinsegae Group's creative content studio, presents.
Festival credentials
The film has already proven itself with genre audiences abroad. The Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival awarded it the Silver Raven Award from its International Competition. In September, Paris' L'Étrange Festival named it winner of its Grand Prix Nouveau Genre Canal+. It will also close the London Korean Film Festival.
What does the sales run change for viewers? North American and European releases now look likely through the named distributors, with Well Go USA's track record on Korean genre cinema suggesting a theatrical or streaming path similar to "The Witch" and "The Childe."
Finecut's second AFM title
Finecut is also bringing the animated feature "Long Long Night" to AFM, where an English-dubbed version gets its first market screening. That film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and screened at the Busan International Film Festival.
With festival prizes, a known director and distributors locked across major territories, "Tristes Tropiques" enters its Nov. 25 Korean release as one of the more fully sold titles in Finecut's market slate.
