Woody Allen's new feature begins shooting in Madrid on Oct. 5, with Marton Csokas and Jemima Kirke leading an international cast and WestEnd Films handling world sales.
Csokas, known for "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Equalizer," and Kirke, of "Girls" and "Sex Education," have joined the untitled project. The ensemble also includes Jakob Oftebro ("Hamilton," "Kon-Tiki"), Peter Vives ("The Time in Between," "Velvet") and Alexi Wasser ("Messy," "Girls").
Allen wrote and directs the contemporary comedy. Principal photography will take place in the city and region of Madrid, and the film will shoot in English.
Where does this fit in Allen's Spanish filmography?
The project marks Allen's third production shot in Spain, following "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (2008) and "Rifkin's Festival" (2020). It is, however, his first film made in Madrid itself.
"I will be very happy to return to Spain. This will be my third time filming there and my first opportunity to make a film in Madrid, a city I have always loved," Allen said.
Madrid-based Wanda Vision and Allen's production banner, Gravier Productions, are producing alongside 3SIX9 Studios. The creative team includes José Luis Alcaine, Sonia Grande and Alain Bainée.
Who is selling it, and where will buyers see it?
WestEnd Films will introduce the film to international buyers at the upcoming American Film Market. The deal continues a long-standing partnership between the London-based sales house and Gravier Productions.
WestEnd handled world sales on Allen's recent films, including "Coup de Chance," which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and sold to distributors in over 30 countries. The company also represents a library of 25 Allen titles, among them "Midnight in Paris," "Match Point" and "Blue Jasmine."
Maya Amsellem, managing director of WestEnd Films, said: "We're delighted to continue our long-standing collaboration with Woody Allen and his team. Following the strong international response to 'Coup de Chance,' we're thrilled to bring his new film to market. It brings together an exciting international ensemble cast in Madrid, and we look forward to introducing it to buyers at AFM."
The Oct. 5 start date gives the production a runway toward an AFM launch while cameras are still rolling — a sales strategy that worked for "Coup de Chance" across more than 30 territories.
