Dana Margolin, former frontperson of Brighton rock band Porridge Radio, has released "Big Beautiful Sound," their first single as a solo artist.

The song is a spare acoustic ballad. According to press materials, Margolin set themselves a strict creative challenge: every element of the song had to fit on an 8-track recording. The result strips the arrangement down to its essentials, a deliberate contrast with the fuller sound Margolin built across nearly a decade of work with Porridge Radio.

The video matches the song's restraint. Mike Mills and Joe Nankin directed the black-and-white clip, which takes an equally spartan visual approach to the material.

In a press statement, Margolin described the journey at the heart of the song in vivid, characteristically unsentimental terms. "We go all the way down together," Margolin said, "down a spiral staircase into the centre of the earth where there is darkness and nothing can grow, and we chose to go there, and wasn't it fun, and right there at the deepest depths of the journey is a glowing ember, something luminous, a big and beautiful sound."

The statement's imagery — descent, darkness, chosen confrontation, and a final point of light — mirrors the structure of the song itself, which moves from an austere opening toward the expansive sound of its title.

"Big Beautiful Sound" arrives as Margolin's first release since Porridge Radio's breakup in 2025. The band released four studio albums over nine years. Their final LP, Clouds in the Sky They Will Always Be There for Me, arrived in 2024. The band followed it with an EP, The Machine Starts to Sing, drawn from the sessions for that album.

The single now stands as the first document of what Margolin's songwriting looks like outside the band format — and under a formal constraint that pushes austerity to the foreground.
