Warner Bros. has delayed "Gremlins 3" from Nov. 19, 2027, to Oct. 6, 2028, pushing the long-gestating sequel back by nearly a year.

The studio has not given a reason for the shift. The move lands the film in the fall corridor rather than the holiday-season slot that gave the original 1984 film its yuletide setting.

David Zaslav, CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery, first revealed the project during an investor call in 2025. Steven Spielberg returns as executive producer alongside Eleanor Columbus of Maiden Voyage. Chris Columbus, the "Harry Potter" filmmaker who wrote the original "Gremlins" screenplay, will produce and direct. Hannah Marks is writing the script from an original draft by Columbus, Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein.

Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario are producing under Amblin Entertainment, alongside Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe of 26th Street Pictures. The official title, plot details and casting remain undisclosed.

Joe Dante directed the original "Gremlins" in 1984, a horror comedy that played a role in the creation of the PG-13 rating. The film follows Billy, a young boy who receives a cute, furry yet mysterious creature called a Mogwai. The two become fast friends, but the pet comes with two strict rules: never get the Mogwai wet and never feed it after midnight. Both rules get broken. The gremlin multiplies and unleashes chaos on Billy's small town during the holiday season.

The first film was a box office smash, grossing $212 million worldwide against a budget of about $11 million. The 1990 sequel, "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," managed only $41 million by the end of its run but has since become a cult classic.

Warner Bros. Pictures' president of development and production, Jesse Ehrman, signaled the studio's ambitions when the project was announced. "Few titles are as beloved and iconic as 'Gremlins,' and we're beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation," Ehrman said in a statement. "It's a privilege to be working alongside Steven [Spielberg], Chris [Columbus], and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next installment of the magic, mayhem and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027."

That closing date now reads as a relic of an earlier schedule. The extra development time gives Columbus and Marks room to finalize a script and casting that the studio has kept under wraps — and gives fans a longer wait to learn whether the new film keeps the original's Christmas setting or breaks its own rules.
