Netflix has renewed "The Beast in Me" for a second season, with Claire Danes returning to star as Aggie Wiggs and to executive produce, Variety has learned.

Season 1 showrunner Howard Gordon has also signed an overall television deal with Netflix under his Teakwood Lane Productions banner, through which he will develop new series for the streamer. Gordon remains attached to "The Beast in Me," but will serve as co-showrunner on Season 2 alongside Season 1 executive producer Daniel Pearle.

"We always told ourselves we'd only do a second season of 'The Beast in Me' if we found a story that was worthy of the first – and I'm thrilled to say we found it," Gordon said. "We loved making this show and our audience seemed to love watching it, so we're enormously grateful to Jinny Howe and Netflix, and to Karey Burke and 20th Television for giving us the chance to get the band back together and do it again."

The renewal marks a reversal of the show's original format. Netflix picked up "The Beast in Me" in 2024 as a limited series, and it campaigned as one at this year's Emmy Awards. That campaign paid off decisively: Season 1 star Matthew Rhys won the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series, and the show also took the Emmy for outstanding music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special (original dramatic score).

Following the model of "Big Little Lies" and other "limited series" that expanded beyond their initial run, Netflix and the show's team began exploring a second season and opened a writers' room earlier this year. The commercial case was straightforward. "The Beast in Me" debuted at number one on the Netflix global top 10 chart in its premiere week and held a top-10 position for five weeks, accumulating more than 43 million views in seven weeks, per Netflix.

Gabe Rotter created the series and serves as an executive producer. Gordon and Pearle will executive produce as co-showrunners on Season 2, with Danes again executive producing. The executive producer roster also includes Antonio Campos, Caroline Baron, Amy Lippman, Conan O'Brien, David Kissinger, Jeff Ross, Claire Danes and Jodie Foster. The series is produced by 20th Television.

Netflix has not announced a premiere date or a storyline for Season 2, but Gordon's new overall deal signals that the streamer intends to keep the creative team behind its Emmy-winning hit in-house for years to come.
