Harry Styles premiered an unreleased song written in memory of Liam Payne at Madison Square Garden on Friday, on the second anniversary of his former One Direction bandmate's death.
The song, “What Is Enough,” had never been performed publicly. Styles said he wrote it “about two years ago” and kept it private until the encore of his New York residency show.
He delivered it as an acoustic ballad with minimal accompaniment, singing his thoughts aloud to Payne. One line addressed the late singer directly: to “help you understand what you leave behind.”
What did the lyrics say?
The lyrics referenced Payne's funeral, held Nov. 20, 2024. Styles sang: “I could tell you what it's like to bury friends on a Wednesday night, gathered in the garden 'round a fire.”
Fans in the arena, and later those watching video of the performance, struggled to make out every word. The cavernous sound of the venue and Styles' soft delivery worked against them. Some lines did surface, among them: “Among the stars above, the friend in all those satellites… I'm not wise enough, but I wrote you a letter just to burn it up, and watch it rise.”
A eulogy you can barely hear. That, presumably, was the point.
How did Styles introduce it?
He backed into the song with a preamble that first read like a standard goodnight message. “I hope you keep looking after each other, and please get home safety,” he said. “Tell a stranger you love 'em; tell your friends that you love 'em.”
He then reflected on his history with the building. Styles acknowledged a banner honoring his previous “Together, Together” run of shows at MSG, saying: “Being here, I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York. This building means a lot to me, as I said, and I feel incredibly proud when I get to look up there and see my name up there from last year.”
The tone shifted. “And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends. It's sad. I'm sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven't. But, really, it's just about looking after each other,” he said.
He added: “There are so many more people behind it, so many people who have touched my life in such special ways. I wouldn't be here without them.”
Then came the announcement, to huge cheers: “I'm gonna play you a song that I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that's all right with you… This is ‘What Is Enough.'”
What happened after?
The show resumed its regular shape. Styles rounded out the encore with “Sign of the Times” and “Aperture,” closing a night that had until then been, by all accounts, typically celebratory.
The premiere raises an obvious question for fans: whether “What Is Enough” will get a studio release or remain a one-time live tribute, sung once, softly, in the building Styles calls his own.
