  2. Season 1 aired in November 2023, making the gap over three years.

  4. Netflix renewed the show for a third and final season, slated for 2028.

Netflix has set Jan. 19, 2027 as the premiere date for Season 2 of "Blue Eye Samurai." That's more than three years after the adult animated series debuted its first season in November 2023.

The date comes with a clear creative direction. According to the official logline, "Mizu's (Maya Erskine) bloody quest continues in London, where she faces new friends, old foes, and her own demons."

The story splits across two continents. In Japan, Akemi (Brenda Song) and Taigen (Darren Barnet) navigate Edo Castle under a dangerous new Shogun, while Ringo (Masi Oka) searches for new purpose.

Who's in the cast?

The returning leads are Maya Erskine, Brenda Song, Darren Barnet and Masi Oka. New Season 2 cast members include Jonathan Pryce, Joel Kim Booster and Sherry Cola, with more names yet to surface.

Season 1 carried heavyweight talent too: Kenneth Branagh, George Takei, Randall Park, Stephanie Hsu and Ming-Na Wen all appeared.

Behind the camera, Michael Green and Amber Noizumi created the series and serve as writers and executive producers. Erwin Stoff executive produces alongside them. Jane Wu is the supervising director and producer, and Blue Spirit handles the animation.

What does the long gap change for the show?

A three-plus-year wait between seasons is unusual even by streaming standards. Netflix is hedging the risk by already committing to the ending: the streamer announced in August that "Blue Eye Samurai" has been renewed for a third season, which will be its last. That final season is slated to debut in 2028.

In practice, that means the two remaining seasons will arrive within roughly a year of each other, closing out the story in a compressed window rather than stretching it indefinitely.

The show has credibility to protect. Season 1 won four Creative Arts Emmy Awards in 2024, including Outstanding Animated Program. It beat out "Scavengers Reign," "The Simpsons," "X-Men '97" and "Bob's Burgers" for that prize — a field mixing critical favorites and network institutions.

The Emmy record also explains Netflix's patience. Award-winning adult animation is a scarce commodity, and the platform appears willing to trade release speed for a finished, deliberate arc.

For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: mark January 2027, expect the London-set pivot in Mizu's revenge story, and prepare for a 2028 finale that the creators have already written toward.
