Sky says production has begun on the eight-episode The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, its television adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Milennium novels. The announcement discloses 26 cast members, including David Oyelowo as Mikael Blomkvist and Viola Prettejohn as Lisbeth Salander.

Newly announced cast

  • Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes, Slow Horses) as Henrik Vanger.
  • James D’Arcy (Oppenheimer, VisionQuest) as Martin Vanger.
  • Lena Olin (Nine Perfect Strangers, The Housewife) as Isabella Vanger.
  • Camille Cottin (Call My Agent!, Stillwater) as Erika Berger.
  • Alun Armstrong (The Choral, Breeders) as Harald Vanger.
  • Jessica Raine (Two Weeks in August, The Devil’s Hour) as Cecilia Vanger.
  • Paul Ready (Ann Droid, The Terror) as Birger Vanger.

Oyelowo plays disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist, while Prettejohn plays hacker Lisbeth Salander. Sky’s announcement notes that Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara played the same roles in David Fincher’s 2011 film of the same title.

Remaining disclosed ensemble

  • Ariyon Bakare (Mr. Loverman, The Mosquito Coast) as Palmgren.
  • Lee Ross (Andor) as DI Gustaf Morell.
  • Steve Wall (Black Doves) as Otto Falk.
  • Justin Salinger (Hijack, The Strays) as Bjurman.
  • Allan Corduner (Homeland, Tár) as Dirch Frode.
  • Rochenda Sandall (Amandaland, War) as Armansky.
  • Naomi Townsend (Going Dark, The Orange Cube Project) as Mimmi Wu.
  • Ingrid Keighley (Invasion) as the young Harriet Vanger.

  • Enzo Cilenti (Kill Jackie, Black Mirror) as Greger Beckman.
  • Dónall Ó Héalaí (Hidden Assets, The Surgeon and Landlines) as Anders Ahlund.
  • Lochlann Ó Mearáin (The Rainmaker) as Gottfried.

According to Sky’s synopsis, the adaptation will bring “the story into the present day” and retain “the characters, gripping mystery and investigative DNA of Larsson’s novels,” while examining how “power, secrecy and misogyny take on new and insidious forms in an ever more connected digital world.”

The synopsis says the first novel follows “canceled star journalist Mikael Blomkvist and uncompromising hacker Lisbeth Salander” as they investigate the disappearance of Harriet Vanger. She “vanished more than three decades ago from the secluded island home of one of Sweden’s most powerful industrial dynasties.”

Their search of the Vanger family’s buried past draws them toward “a chilling threat unfolding dangerously close to them in the present.” The synopsis offers no examples of the digital forms that power, secrecy and misogyny will take, or how closely the update will follow the books.

What does the casting change for viewers?

The casting changes the production’s public cast map, not yet its viewing options. Sky names six adult Vangers and six younger versions of Harriet, Henrik, Isabella, Harald, Martin and Birger, alongside officials including DI Gustaf Morell, Palmgren and Bjurman.

Still, the announcement gives no episode allocations, screen-time hierarchy or premiere date. The cast list signals scale; it does not show how the adaptation will balance the family, the investigators and the threat in the synopsis.

Left Bank Pictures (The Crown, Dept Q) produces. Amanda Coe (Apple Tree Yard, The Trial of Christine Keeler), Steve Lightfoot (Behind Her Eyes, The Punisher) and Angela LaManna (The Haunting of Bly Manor, Behind Her Eyes) write and executive produce the series.

Reinaldo Marcus Green, the director of King Richard, leads the directing team alongside Andrea Harkin (The Trial of Christine Keeler, Time) and Amy Neil (Hanna, Hostage).

Sky says the series will be available on Sky in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Sony Pictures Television handles international distribution. The announcement gives no premiere date, episode order or rollout timetable.

Until Sky sets dates and releases the episodes, the announcement documents casting, premise and distribution, not whether the proposed present-day update works.
