Variety reports that “Sleepless Nights 2” is targeting an April or May 2027 shoot in Cairo and elsewhere in Egypt. The sequel follows the 2003 relationship drama that Variety called a landmark of contemporary Egyptian cinema.
Unlike the original film’s longer timeline, the sequel will compress its story into two days. It will focus on Gen Z relationships and retain ties to original characters. At the El Gouna Film Festival, three filmmakers presented new details.
Original screenwriter Tamer Habib joined director Karim El Shenawy and Cairo Films CEO and producer Wesam Seif Elislam. El Shenawy’s credits include “The Tale of Daye’s Family” and “The Gentlemen.”
What changes in the sequel?
“The script is related to the original characters, but with a new generation,” Seif Elislam told Variety. He also said audiences would see “some of the characters from part one.”
Variety reported that the 2003 film starred Egyptian cinema veteran and El Gouna honoree Mona Zaki. It also featured a star-studded cast. The original centered on four young couples. They navigated marriage, infidelity, friendship and emotional dissatisfaction.
The sequel shifts to a younger group confronting relationships more than two decades later, according to the filmmakers. Where the original covered a longer period and four young couples, the sequel confines a younger generation’s present-day relationship conflicts to just two concentrated days.
Takeaway: The sequel links original characters to a younger generation and a much shorter timeline.
Who will star, and when will filming begin?
No casting announcements have been made, Variety reported. The team would not say whether any members of the original cast will return. Both new faces and possible returning performers remain open.
Habib recently completed the first draft of the screenplay. Work on the second draft is now underway. The filmmakers said filming will take place in Cairo. Other locations across Egypt remain unannounced.
Cairo Films and Al Arabia Cinema International are producing the film through a partnership. Seif Elislam said Al Arabia holds the “Sleepless Nights” IP and will distribute the sequel.
The film has a confirmed production partnership and distributor, yet its actors, full shooting schedule and precise Egyptian locations remain publicly unspecified for the April or May 2027 window.
Takeaway: The production and distribution partners are set, but cast and locations remain unresolved.
Why did Habib revisit the film after 23 years?
Habib rejected sequel suggestions repeatedly over 23 years. He said he had no interest in making one simply to capitalize on the original film’s success.
“During the 23 years, there was always, always the offer or someone asking me, ‘Why don’t you make a second part?’ And my answer was always ‘no,’ because I didn’t intend to do a second part.”
After agreeing to return, Habib spent roughly eight months asking what justified the title “Sleepless Nights 2.” He explained that Egypt’s marriage and relationship landscape had changed dramatically since the original.
Habib gave his reason in two parts. “Life is getting tougher,” he explained. “So this was the reason I chose ‘yes.’ I’ll talk about those marital problems now, after 23, 24 years.”
He cited divorce, ghosting, social media and Egypt’s changing class dynamics as a different landscape for the new generation. “I think it’s a story for Gen Z,” he added.
To understand Gen Z, Habib and the team screened the original for people near the sequel characters’ age, then held a Q&A about their perspectives on relationships. “They showed me the way,” Habib recalled.
Takeaway: Habib’s return rests on changed relationship pressures, supported by research with the sequel’s target audience.
How did the partnership and director come together?
Seif Elislam credited the partnership’s initiators by name:
“Being approached by Al Arabia Cinema International CEO and chairperson Essad Younis and strategic advisor Omar Alkhawaja about a partnership was like a dream,” Seif Elislam recalled.
Seif Elislam suggested El Shenawy for the project, pairing the director’s personal vision with a producer’s stated wish to keep the production in “safe hands.” El Shenawy said he first saw the original as a university student.
He considered it markedly different from Egyptian cinema around it, particularly in its depiction of complicated emotions and relationships. He recalled:
“I was heavily advised not to do it, not to put myself in the comparison.” “People were telling me, ‘You’re in a good position in your career. Why would you risk this?’”
But he added: “If I’m driven by fear, not only will I not do this film, but I will miss a lot of great opportunities like this one as well.”
Takeaway: The director joined despite career warnings, bringing a personal investment in the original to the sequel.
What does the two-day structure demand?
El Shenawy said the sequel will retain elements of the original’s structure and narrative approach while grounding its dialogue, conflicts and characters firmly in the present. The compressed schedule carries the dramatic argument. It allows the film to “dig deeper in a more concentrated timeline.”
Seif Elislam tied his involvement to the original’s standing in Egyptian cinema. “‘Sleepless Nights’ was one of the films that made an effect on the cinema industry,” he reflected. “It changed the narrative of the movies. I’m glad to be transferred from the audience chair to the producer chair.”
Takeaway: The team must now prepare a two-day Gen Z sequel for April or May 2027, with no cast announced and the original’s reputation at stake.
