Charlie Brooker's new Netflix series now has a title: "Blackmere." The streamer confirmed the name, released first-look images and announced that Rory Kinnear has joined the cast at its U.K. upfronts in London on Thursday.

The title invites an obvious comparison to Brooker's flagship anthology, "Black Mirror" — and Netflix itself flagged the distinction, noting the new show should not be confused with the writer and producer's other series for the platform.

Kinnear, known for "The Diplomat" and previous appearances in "Black Mirror," stars alongside Paddy Considine, Georgina Campbell and Lena Headey in the four-part series. Netflix has scheduled it for early 2027.

Netflix describes the show as an "absurd comedy disguised as an incredibly serious crime thriller," according to its synopsis. The plot description continues: "Tormented Detective John Blackmere (Considine) leaves the rain-soaked Northern city of Bleakford for London to avenge his partner's death and catch a ritualistic serial killer before they run out of victims. Contains blood and frowning."

Brooker created and wrote the series. Co-writers include Ben Caudell, Jason Hazeley, Emer Kenny, Daniel Maier and Joel Morris, with additional material by Victoria Asare Archer. Brooker executive produces alongside Jessica Rhoades and Annabel Jones. Mark Kinsella co-executive produces, Richard Webb produces and Al Campbell serves as series director.

Netflix first announced the project last year under the working title "Untitled Charlie Brooker Project." At the time, Brooker marked the announcement with a characteristically deadpan statement.

"I'm beyond thrilled to be saying these words for the press release. I've dreamt of providing a quote ever since I was a young foetus, and now here I am doing it," Brooker said. "I'd pinch myself, but like all of us, I'm terrified that if I do that, I might wake up and discover 2025 has all been a magical dream. Please watch my show. I am begging you."

The title reveal gives the project a firm identity after more than a year of anonymity. It also clarifies the shape of Brooker's slate at Netflix: a broad genre parody in "Blackmere" running parallel to the technology-driven dread of "Black Mirror."

That flagship series is not going anywhere. "Black Mirror" will return to Netflix for an eighth season, with production starting this summer.

With "Blackmere" set for early 2027, Brooker will have two series at distinct stages of the pipeline — and audiences now know exactly which title belongs to which.
