Sky has cast David Oyelowo and Viola Prettejohn as the leads of its forthcoming series "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Oyelowo, known for "Silo" and "Selma," will play disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist. Prettejohn, whose credits include "The Crown" and "The Testament of Ann Lee," takes the role of hacker Lisbeth Salander.

The eight-part mystery thriller reimagines Stieg Larsson's hit Millennium book series for television. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara played the same characters in David Fincher's 2011 film adaptation of the novel.

Left Bank Pictures, the production company behind "The Crown" and "Dept Q," produces the series. It promises to bring the story "into the present day" by "exploring how power, secrecy and misogyny take on new and insidious forms in an ever more connected digital world." Filming begins in Lithuania next month.

Oscar-nominated "King Richard" director Reinaldo Marcus Green has joined as lead director and executive producer. Amanda Coe ("Apple Tree Yard," "The Trial of Christine Keeler"), Steve Lightfoot ("Behind Her Eyes," "The Punisher") and Angela LaManna ("The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Behind Her Eyes") write and executive produce. Andrea Harkin ("The Trial of Christine Keeler," "Time") and Amy Neil ("Hanna," "Hostage") will also direct.

According to the show's synopsis, the series follows "canceled star journalist Mikael Blomkvist and uncompromising hacker Lisbeth Salander as they investigate the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, who vanished more than three decades ago from the secluded island home of one of Sweden's most powerful industrial dynasties. As they delve deeper into the Vanger family's buried past, their investigation draws them closer to a chilling threat unfolding dangerously close to them in the present."

Variety first reported the commission in January.

Oyelowo executive produces alongside Charlotte Moore and John Phillips for Left Bank Pictures and Sam Hoyle for Sky. Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal also executive produce. Nuala O'Leary serves as series producer.

Moore emphasized the timeliness of Larsson's material. Sky will air the series in the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Sony Pictures Television handles international distribution and will introduce the series to global buyers at Mipcom in October. Deadline Hollywood first reported the casting news.
