David Reiland has been named Principal Conductor of the Orchestre de Picardie, the French orchestra has announced. He will begin his tenure during the 2027-28 season.

The appointment comes with a built-in transition period. Reiland will first conclude his tenure as music director of the Orchestre National de Metz Grand Est before taking up his new post in Picardy.

He succeeds German conductor Johanna Malangré, who has led the Orchestre de Picardie as music director since September 2022. Her departure and Reiland's arrival will mark a generational handover at the orchestra, which has built its identity around a French symphonic core and a strong regional presence.

Reiland brings a substantial European résumé to the post. From 2012 to 2018 he served as Artistic and Music Director of the Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg, an ensemble he shaped over six seasons. His guest-conducting credits include the Korean National Symphony Orchestra, the Sinfonietta Lausanne and the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker.

He has also worked with several of Germany's leading orchestras, among them the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Münchner Rundfunkorchner — a list that signals standing on both sides of the Franco-German musical axis.

Opera occupies a significant place in his career. As an opera conductor, Reiland has led productions at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Vlaamse Opera, the Oper Leipzig, the Opéra de Lausanne, the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg, the Korean National Opera and the Komische Oper Berlin.

That operatic breadth is relevant to his new role. The Orchestre de Picardie, based in Amiens, regularly pairs symphonic programming with staged and semi-staged projects, and a conductor fluent in the opera house expands the ensemble's practical options for repertoire and partnerships.

Reiland's path also reflects a broader pattern in French regional orchestras, which increasingly recruit conductors with international profiles grounded in both the symphonic and operatic traditions rather than exclusively French career tracks.

The 2027-28 start date gives both Reiland and the orchestra time to plan his first programs. Audiences in Picardy can expect his initial season to reflect the double identity — symphonic and operatic — that has defined his conducting career to date.
