Toronto Symphony Reports Second Surplus, Renews CEO Mark Williams
The Toronto Symphony closed fiscal 2026 with a $34,000 operating surplus, nearly $1 million accumulated surplus, record single-ticket sales and 90% average attendance.

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra has reported an operating surplus for the second consecutive year and renewed CEO Mark Williams for another five years, according to its annual report.
The orchestra closed its 2026 fiscal year on June 30 with an operating surplus of approximately $34,000, increasing its accumulated surplus to nearly $1 million — what the report calls the TSO's strongest financial position ever. The turnaround is significant for an institution long described as financially ailing, and Slippedisc notes that Williams sits at the top of Boston's search list should a leadership change occur there.
The surplus came alongside record demand. Subscription sales reached 105% of the annual goal. Single-ticket sales were the highest in the TSO's history. Overall attendance averaged 90% capacity, breaking the record set the previous year.
The report attributes the demand to the breadth and diversity of the artistic programme envisioned by Music Director Gustavo Gimeno. Highlights of the season included a gala performance with pianist Lang Lang and the 100th anniversary of the TSO School Concerts.
The season also featured the world première of the multidisciplinary Young People's Concert She Holds Up the Stars, created with the Indigenous arts organization Red Sky Performance, and the Lunar New Year celebration Year of the Horse. The season closed with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, a performance of which was live-streamed to the screens at Sankofa Square in partnership with the Luminato Festival.
With a renewed CEO, a second surplus and record box-office figures, the TSO has consolidated a recovery that its annual report frames as structural rather than incidental — and has done so in a fiscal year when many peer orchestras continue to run deficits.
